Installation

Good Reception: Outside of a window
Locate a window where you get signal.

  1. Mount the Signal Antenna outside of the window
  2. Place the Base Unit across the room (15 feet away) where you want to create a Cell Zone™.
  3. Attach the coax cable to the Signal Antenna.
  4. Run the coax cable from the Signal Antenna through the window to the Base Unit using a window entry kit (optional).
  5. Attach the Antenna to the Base Unit and position it so that it is at a 90 degree angle to the Base Unit.
  6. Set the Base Unit on a furniture piece.
  7. Attach the Power Supply to the Base Unit and plug the power supply into an outlet. See the Troubleshooting section if a Red light lights up.

 

Best Reception: Attic or Roof Installation
The following instructions are recommended for the best reception.
Once you have confirmed that you have a cell phone signal either outside your home or inside your attic, you are ready to install the Signal Antenna using the supplied mounting brackets, Signal Antenna, and coaxial cable.

  • Identify the best location around your home with the strongest signal (best signal is typically found on the roof) for attachment of the antenna mounting bracket. For good the signal reception, install the Signal Antenna at the highest possible point in your area. Avoid placing the antenna within 3 feet (1 meter) of metal objects (pipes, metal siding, A/C unit, etc.)
  • Attach the mounting bracket so that when the Signal Antenna is attached, it will be positioned vertically.
  • Mount the Signal Antenna to the mounting bracket, making sure that the antenna is positioned vertically
  • Unroll the RG59 Mini coaxial cable supplied with your zBoost Series kit removing any loops or kinks and attach to the base of the Signal Antenna.
  • Run the coax cable from the Signal Antenna through the window to the Base Unit using a window entry kit (optional).
  • Attach the Antenna to the Base Unit and position it so that it is at a 90 degree angle to the Base Unit.
  • Set the Base Unit on a furniture piece.
  • Attach the Power Supply to the Base Unit and plug the power supply into an outlet. If a Red light lights up, try further separating the antennas and then see the Troubleshooting section of the manual.

I really think that everyone that are in a fringed area should get a zboost zb545 soho 3g so thy can talk on there cell phones clear as a bell.

In case it';s helpful for anyone in a similar situation...

My family owns a cabin in the middle of the Voyaguer';s National Park, on Namakan Lake in northern Minnesota. The nearest tower is an AT&T tower that - according to the coordinates from http://www.antennasearch.com/ - is 12.6 miles from our cabin.

Between our cabin and an unobstructed line of sight is a hill about 15-20 feet high, and of course the land is dense with pine trees that go up perhaps 30-40-50 feet higher.

Prior to installing a booster, we got zero service at the cabin. No bars, ever. Not on AT&T, not on any other carrier. We found that if we threw a rope over a branch of a tree we could raise a cell phone high up and then - maybe - using bluetooth we could make a call - but that was not solid enough to be worthwhile.

If we walked up the hill behind the cabin to get a line-of-sight to the antenna, we might get one bar (easily worse than -105dbm...) but that was intermittent, likely dependent on atmospheric conditions. We could often text, but the texts would be “sending” for a long time, and sometimes error out. Sending/receiving email or surfing the web was generally out of the question. This was using both an iPhone 5 as well as an HTC OneS (and I have no idea how good those phones are at poor signal conditions – maybe they’re great, maybe not..)

We did some research and spent some time deciding between Wilson equipment and Zboost. Given that this is a cabin that is 25 miles from the nearest road (access only by water) and we’re not there frequently, cost was a factor, so we chose zBoost – intending to return it and go with the Wilson if it didn’t work out.

We ordered a ZB545 and directional CANT-0042 (along with lightning arrestor YX-044, which has not yet arrived) from Solid Signal. The ordering process was smooth, although because the YX-044 was on backorder that held up shipment of the order for a while, but a quick online chat with customer service solved that and the equipment arrived in time for our trip up and install in late May 2014.

We installed it using a mast made of electrical conduit, using two sections (approx. 20 feet) mounted on top of an outbuilding that had a roof about 8 feet off the ground, so the antenna is likely 25-ish feet off the gound (with a few feet of the mast being occupied attached to the building…) The mast is grounded using a 10 ga cable to a ground rod driven into the ground directly beneath it.

The antenna then feeds through about 70-80 feet of RG-6 cable to the ZB545, mounted in the cabin. There is one fitting in the middle of the line – currently a female-female splice, which will be replaced by the lightning arrestor when it arrives. We know this distance is not ideal, but we tested this setup originally by using the 50 foot cable that came with it (and just hand-holding the mast), then switched to the 70-80 foot cable, and found no noticeable difference in signal strength.

The antenna and base unit are likely separated by more like 40-50 feet “line of sight”, since the cable runs down the mast and then across to the cabin.

The CANT-0042 is pointed almost directly away from the booster, perhaps at about a 160-170 degree angle from the booster.

With this, we consistently get at least 2 bars (measuring -97 to -100 dbm on a utility on my phone), and more frequently 3 bars (-92 to -95dbm). We’ve seen as good as -89dbm, and full five bars has flashed at times.

This setup allows us to make phone calls within most of the cabin, and since we mounted the booster within a few feet of the front wall of the cabin, we can also use the phones out on the deck, and also down to a fire pit perhaps 20-30 feet away (although that’s a bit spotty…)

Data is more of a challenge… We can get good data connections in the cabin in the room the booster is in, and “OK” connections on the deck. Much farther than that and forget it. I don’t know why it can make clear phone calls farther than that but not data connections…

Typically what we do now is set up a phone to be a hotspot, then just set it on a shelf near the booster. It gets at least 3 bars consistently there (sometimes 4), and we can then connect laptops or iPads to that hotspot wirelessly, which allows nice, solid data connections with a fairly long range. I’m thinking about buying a dedicated cellular hotspot device, but we’ll see since that would require another paid connection.

Hope this helps anyone out there in a similar situation!
