If you want to cut the cord, New York City is a great place for free TV.  With more than 50 programming options in New York City alone, the Big Apple is one big TV market!

Whether you call it “attitude” or “straightforwardness,” New Yorkers are known for their down-to-earth take on life.  This outlook extends to the way many New Yorkers feel about cable TV.  “Why pay for it when I can get it for free?” seems to be the prevailing opinion.  Are you a no-nonsense New Yorker who’s tired of the cable company shakedown?  Then it’s time to hit them where it really hurts – in the wallet.  Cut the cord and stop paying for many of your favorite TV shows.  Remember, all 10 of the top 10 rated shows are available for free with a TV antenna.

If you’re living or moving to New York City, there’s no better time to cut the cord!  The immediate area has about 50 channels plus sub-channels, and there are many more in all of the surrounding sub-markets.  That’s a ton of HDTV served up each day for any and all TV antennas ready to grab the signal.  Did we mention that antennas deliver crystal-clear HDTV reception?

The New York Metropolitan Area

The New York Metropolitan Area

Cord cutting makes sense in New York City because it’s the most populous city in the U.S.  This includes people from the other four boroughs – Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens – and the Lower Hudson Valley area.  This media market also includes the five largest cities in New Jersey (Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, and Edison), and six of the largest cities in Connecticut (Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, and Danbury). Oh, and don’t forget five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania (Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Warren counties).  This makes for a lot of TV viewers!

Here’s the ultimate listing of New York City TV stations for cord cutters to enjoy. Note that "Ch." is the channel you see on your screen while "RF" is the actual broadcast channel.

*Additionally, WNYW and WWOR have their feeds simulcast in standard definition on a sub-channel of each respective station. This provides over-the-air viewers a viewable signal of both stations if they can receive one station, but not the other.

*The New York Metropolitan area has many low-powered TV stations not listed here. As a cord-cutter, you might or might not be able to receive some or all of the programming from these stations, depending upon a variety of factors.

Cord-Cutting and NYC Sports Fans

Cord Cutting and NYC Sports Fans

The Yankees are a huge favorite among New York sports fans.  So are the Mets, Giants, Jets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, and the Liberty.  If you’re a sports fan, you need to know that cutting the cord limits the amount of games you can see on TV.  While this presents a challenge, we urge you not to give.  Our Cord-Cutter’s Guide to New York City Sports gives you options for catching all the baseball, basketball, hockey and football in New York City.

What's Available in Markets Near New York City?

One of the best things about the New York market is that there are so many other markets nearby.  For example, if you’re located on Long Island, chances are good that you can pick up broadcast TV in Hartford, Connecticut and Providence, Rhode Island.  Many New Jersey viewers in Trenton and Fort Dix are able to receive broadcast TV programming in Philadelphia and/or Baltimore.  What you receive depends upon where you live, what type of TV antenna you have, and other factors.

Your TV Antenna in New York City

Your

Some cord-cutting websites say New York City is a “point-and-shoot” market.  They'll tell you that all the broadcast towers are atop the Empire State Building.  Then they'll offer to sell you a TV antenna that you just, "put in your window to get every TV station in New York City!"  It's not as simple as all that.

Solid Signal provides the best cord-cutting experience to all our clients.  We start by providing accurate information to help you make an informed decision.  Cord cutters need the right TV antenna to get the most channels with the clearest reception.  With that in mind, here are a few things that New York City cord cutters need to know:

  • Not all broadcast towers are atop the Empire State Building.  Broadcast towers are spread throughout the New York City market.
  • There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all TV antenna.  The antenna you need depends upon how far you are from your desired broadcast antennas and what types of channels you want to receive.
  • Which New York City TV channels are your favorites?  This is an important point when choosing whether to purchase a VHF, UHF, or VHF/UHF antenna.
  • Many factors can affect your TV reception, including trees, tall buildings, and other variables.  These must be considered when choosing the right TV antenna for you.

At Solid Signal, we take these and other factors into consideration before recommending an indoor TV antenna or one of three types of outdoor TV antennas. We've compiled our most popular antennas for indoors and outdoors into one handy guide that helps you compare and choose the right antenna for you!
