Want to cut the cord to watch free TV in the Hampton Roads area?  Solid Signal helps you trade expensive cable bills for free HDTV.

If you call the Norfolk area home, you’re in the core of the Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News area, aka the Hampton Roads area.  The area is named after the body of water known as Hampton Roads, and ships and shipping play a huge role in the day-to-day life of the entire area. Norfolk was incorporated in 1619 and it played a significant role in America’s tobacco industry.  The city was all but burnt to the ground during the Revolutionary War, but was quickly rebuilt by the industrious people of the area.  Today, Norfolk is the location of Naval Station Norfolk, two of NATO’s strategic command headquarters, the Norfolk Southern Railway and Maersk Line, Limited.  This strong economy helps make Norfolk the historic, urban, financial, and cultural hub of the Hampton Roads area.

Is Portsmouth where you hang your hat?  It lies directly opposite Norfolk and is a rather impressive city in its own right. Its home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the U.S. Navy’s oldest and largest industrial facility. It’s also home to historic sites such as the Olde Towne District, Naval Medical Center, The Hill House, and more.  Or perhaps you reside in Newport News?  If so, you probably live in one the many distinct communities and neighborhoods for which the city is known.  Your city has undergone plenty of recent revitalization, which has led to a renewed downtown area among other improvements.  Like its other neighbors in Hampton Roads, the city’s economy is tied to shipping and the military.

The Hampton Roads area is a great place to watch TV.  The transmitters of many local TV stations broadcast a wide variety of free HDTV on a number of channels and sub-channels.  Some of these towers are located in the Driver neighborhood of Suffolk while others are scattered throughout the area.  With a TV antenna, you can enjoy all this free local programming.  It’s called “cutting the cord,” and many of your neighbors are doing it.  This is why you’re probably seeing TV antennas atop some of your neighbors’ houses.

Your TV Antenna in Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News

To cut the cord, you need a TV antenna. But you can’t just buy any antenna and get the best over-the-air TV reception.  No two TV antennas are the same, and no two over-the-air viewing experiences are the same.  If you’re considering cutting the cord, keep these things in mind:

  • How far you live from your local TV transmitter locations.
  • The number of buildings, trees, and other obstructions between your home and the broadcast towers.
  • Which channels are your favorites?  This is important when choosing a VHF, UHF, or VHF/UHF antenna..

Why are these factors important?  Each one can affect the quality of your OTA TV reception and the number of TV programs you receive.  We can help you determine whether you need an indoor TV antenna or one of three types of outdoor TV antennas.  To help you better understand the process, we’ve compiled this handy guide to match you with the best TV antenna.
