Mike: ...TV is launching three new all 3D channels this year which will offer sports, movies and entertainment. Customers of DirecTV will be happy to know that their current HD receivers will be getting a free firmware upgrade work with 3D TVs in June. DirecTV is partnered up with major 3D company RealD to offer tools to help content providers bring more of 3D to the viewers. The RealD format has lower resolution than blue-ray 3D but its also the feature that allow DirecTV to bring it to its customer without making mobbed by a whole new receiver. With companies like Fox Sports, NBC, ESPN, Sony Discovery and Turner Broadcasting, DirecTV hopes to bring even more content in 2011.

One format that surely have a great source of content is blu-ray 3D. Disney and Sony already announced their plans to bring 3D box [Inaudible] [00:00:54] to blu-ray and 3D. With the popularity of 3D in the movie theaters, there will only be an increase in number of movies being released to blu-ray and 3D. Well there appears to be only handful of 3D movies coming up by the end of 2010, your best bet maybe to convert your current programming to 3D. That’s why some TVs like Sony will have a built-in 2D to 3D converter. We got a chance to check them out at this year’s consumer electronic show. Now the converted content will have quite the same depth as need of 3D content and when the converter is using on screen motion determine what sticks out the 3D rendering is far from perfect.

So far I haven’t been totally thrilled with line up of 3D coming down the pipe, since its mainly consisted of kid’s movies, but video games are next to go with 3D and since you are already rendered in the 3D engine it won’t take much more than a hardware upgrade to experience it and video is already selling its solution to 3D gaming. If you have a compatible GeForce graphics card and you purchase the 3D vision bundle for under 600 bucks which includes a 22 inch monitor and emitter and a pair of 3D glasses. If your current monitor has a refresh rate of 120 hertz then you can get away with just the glasses and the emitter for less than 200 bucks. For consults Sony has already on board with 3D announcing that the PS3 will be 3D enabled with a simple firmware update.

Sony is announcing updates for games like motor storm and little big planet. The first line up of 3D TV has been pretty impressive and this technology is being backed by all the major manufacturers. I am still not totally convinced if 3D in the living room is going to be wildly accepted, but I think its going to be a great upgrade for home theater enthusiasts looking to bring home that 3D experience. This is Mike from Solid Signal TV and thanks for watching.
