This thing is truly pocket-sized. We use these on hunting trips and depending on terrain ive transmitted up to 2 miles away on some frequencies. roadrunner52 - Waterford, MI - 3/1/2018 11:48:47 AM Ive previously just used the storebought 2 packs of walkie-talkies. Wanted something with better range an flexability. I definately got it. And to anyone with that much experience, you will probably have to do some reading on which frequencies are for what.
Across the internet you will see the debate about these being able to broadcast on on frequencies that require a license. A law that I've heard has never been enforced. But I absolutely recommend finding the common frequencies for walkie talkies and programming those until you know more.
Strong. Full featured (possibly too many lol). And the Dual Band feature that lets you monitor two channels at once is priceless. AlwaysOn - Burlington, IA - 11/14/2017 4:15:06 PM Compared to two radios at big box stores, this radio encompasses them all. Typically walkie talkies use GMSR or VHF/UHF frequencies. This radios does both of those and more.
I was able to talk to my friends walkie talkies all through this model. It can be a little intimidating if youve next messed with a CB, or scanner or anything more than a basic walkie talkie. But to me it was as easy as finding a channel and holding the button to talk.
That being said. Make sure you are on the right group of channels. The other review here points the fact that some of the frequency you have access to say they are required to have a licence. NOT ALL FREQUENCIES ON HERE NEED A LICENCE.
I have worked at a golf course who uses these on legit frequencies, and I also talked to a gentleman who worked airport who said all of staff uses these.
Also for the record the FCC is not tracking down and fining anyone thousands of dollars. This seems to be a point of contention among radio enthusiasts. My advice is to do some research on bands to operate on.
I bought walkie talkies from walmart and in small print they said to register these with the FCC. I am sure that goes largely noticed and is merely a disclaimer.
All in all these are really tough, fully featured radios that all fit in a compact size. And of course, ya cant be that price.
This radio REQUIRES a license for any frequency it can transmit on. It is cumbersome to manually program and lower powered than most Amateur handhelds. Tom - AJ4XM - West Palm Beach, FL - 10/2/2017 1:41:00 PM If you get a FTDI programming cable you can use the free CHIRP programming software to set up the radio. The price on Solid Signal is great. Lower than what eBay and Amazon normally offer. But this is intended as an entry level radio for Amateurs to use with nearby repeaters, or site crews to use in the other parts of the bands where they are licensed. Most of these licenses either require passing an FCC exam or a company paying for a commercial license in their area. You will not hear police or fire since they are on much higher frequencies with more sophisticated technology. If you transmit on a frequency you are not licensed for it will generally cause interference to those who are licensed. They will locate you as the source and report you to the FCC. Fines generally run from a few thousand to as much as $25,000 per incident based on what you interfered with.
As far as the radio itself, it is reasonably well made but does not handle dropping it as well as most smart phones (or more expensive radios) and does not do well with dirt and moisture. If you just want to get your feet wet by listening to what is on these frequencies it is not a great receiver, but it is really cheap. So you will not have wasted much money if you get something better later on or give up on the idea. If you just want a radio to talk to other family members or friends on a camping trip or out riding your ATV or such, you will be much better off with radios for the FRS (Family Radio Service) which is license free and also available at great prices from Solid Signal.
