Not as functional as a CATV DVR-more like a supercharged VCR. It does appear to be reliable, though--more than I can say about off-brand OTA DVRs that I've tried. The Central Scrutinizer - Chicago W Suburbs, IL - 10/20/2018 6:49:40 PM This is the first reliable stand-alone over the air DVR that I've used.
It has reasonable sensitivity-about the same as a typical DTV converter box, a bit better than a typical tuner card or dongle. It makes high-quality recordings. I suspect that it directly copies the MPEG transport stream, rather than reencoding.
That said, its functionality isn't as good as a cable or satellite DVR. It only has 1 tuner, so you can only record 1 channel at a time. Also, you can't overlap 2 consecutive programs to avoid cutting off the end of one or the beginning of the next, even on the same channel. So for instance, if there's a 30 minute episode of your favorite show at 8:00 PM and at 8:30 PM on the same channel, you would want to set it to record 1 recording from 7:58 PM to 9:02 PM to avoid a cutoff.
Setting a recording by time, rather than by the program guide listing, is straightforward. In fact, this unit was designed for time-oriented, rather than title-oriented, programming. You can't tell it to record all episodes of the XYZ Show, for example. Program repeats are by day and time, not by title. As is typical with digital over the air receivers, the program guide only goes forward for a day, more or less.
In conclusion, I recommend this unit, but keep its limitations in mind. It appears to be reliable, and I've already tried a couple of off-brand over-the-air DVRs which were prone to crashing every day or so.
