Feature rich radio in portable package. Tom AJ4XM - West Palm Beach, FL - 11/15/2017 8:48:22 AM This radio is full of features for the SWL and includes Am and FM bands as well as LW frequencies. Almost all of the portable SW radios are made by one company in China now, no matter what name they out on them. This is one of the top of the line models they make. Unless you are on one of the US coasts in a high area (30+ stories or a hill that is 500' or more above seal level) you will need to add an external outside antenna for best reception. Remember the number of SW broadcast stations has greatly diminished over the past 5 years as they have moved to the Internet to carry their information. But there are still a lot of them out there and many have English and Spanish language broadcasts beamed to the US and Canada. And the number of Hams has increased in the US and worldwide to an all time high. We are at the bottom of the 11 year solar cycle now, which greatly reduces radio propagation. But it will start going up soon for the next 11 year cycle. Look online for articles on long wire shortwave antennas and check out CQ magazine, sold monthly at larger newsstands and B&N, for their column on shortwave stations currently active.
Yes you can buy better SWL radios, but for a lot more money. (Hundreds to thousands of dollars more.) For the price and the features this deal is hard to beat. Have patience when tuning in SSB signals (used mostly by Hams). It is almost as much of an art form as a skill. But once you get the hang of it the effort is worthwhile. For more info on Short Wave Listening just do a Google search. With low sun spots I prefer to tune with the Squelch barely on (so I hear all the static) and that lets me find stations that have weaker signals. When the sun spots index gets high again that is not as much of an issue. Having this radio work off an A/C adapter as well as batteries makes it very portable. Great for camping, travelling, cruising, etc.
