So you live in Mobile, Alabama?  Your home is located in the city that features Alabama’s only saltwater port.  The Port of Mobile played a key role in the economic development of the city during its beginnings. Today, it remains busy as the 12th-largest port in the U.S.  This is why Mobile is still known as “the Port City” to this day.  Mobile’s economy continues to diversify, with Mobile County Public Schools as its biggest employer.  Healthcare, education, and various forms of manufacturing and retail sales also contribute to the city’s prosperity.  The city is also rich in history and culture, particularly its Carnival and Mardi Gras parade culture.  Mobile also has many art museums, a symphony orchestra, and much more.  Sports fans enjoy Mobile’s college and minor league teams, and the city’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium hosts important Bowl games.

Located in the westernmost portion of Florida’s panhandle, Pensacola has a rich history. It’s known as “the City of Five Flags” due to the five governments that have ruled it: Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate State of America, and the United States of America. It’s other nicknames include “P-Cola” and the “Cradle of Naval Aviation.” The latter nickname comes from the city being home to the United States Naval Air Station, the National Naval Aviation Museum, and the Blue Angels base.  In addition to the military, Pensacola’s economy is boosted by healthcare, tourism, a variety of other sources.  Four minor league sports teams call the city home.  The city also offers plenty of parks and recreation, arts, and cultural institutions.  All this and more make Pensacola a great place to live, work, and visit.

Fort Walton Beach, Florida is part of the Mobile-Pensacola TV market.  The first people to this area were members of a prehistoric mound-building culture that flourished from 1100-1550 AD.  The first Europeans to arrive in the area were part of a Spanish exploration from Florida to Texas in 1528.  European settlement was sporadic throughout the following years.  On June 15, 1953, the city’s name was officially changed to Fort Walton Beach.  Today, two major Air Force bases – Hurlburt Field and Eglin AFB – border Fort Walton Beach.  Fort Walton Beach is also a year-round fishing and beach resort community that has earned it the nickname of the “Billfish Capital of the World.” The beauty of this area also earned it the nickname of the “Emerald Coast” for good reason.

Cutting the Cord and Sports

Sports in Mobile

Cutting the cord limits the amount of professional sports you can watch on TV.  This is due to agreements between the various teams and TV networks.  We’re sympathetic to sports fans in the Panhandle who want to see their favorite pro sports teams.  Our Cord Cutter's Sports Guide gives you a way to enjoy your favorite pro baseball, basketball, football, and hockey teams after you cut the cord.

What’s Available in Markets Near Mobile-Pensacola?

One of the best things about the Mobile-Pensacola TV market is that there is another media market nearby.  Roughly 62 miles southwest of Mobile is the Gulfport-Biloxi TV market.  If you cut the cord in Mobile-Pensacola, you might be able to receive broadcast TV programming from this adjacent media market.  What you get depends upon where you live, what type of TV antenna you have, and other factors.

Your TV Antenna in the Emerald Coast

To cut the cord, you need a TV antenna. But you can’t just buy any antenna and get the best over-the-air TV reception.  No two TV antennas are the same, and no two over-the-air viewing experiences are the same.  If you’re considering cutting the cord, keep these things in mind:

  • How far you live from your local TV transmitter locations.
  • The number of buildings, trees, and other obstructions between your home and the broadcast towers.
  • Which channels are your favorites?  This is important when choosing a VHF, UHF, or VHF/UHF antenna..

Why are these factors important?  Each one can affect the quality of your OTA TV reception and the number of TV programs you receive.  We can help you determine whether you need an indoor TV antenna or one of three types of outdoor TV antennas.  To help you better understand the process, we’ve compiled this handy guide to match you with the best TV antenna in Mobile/Pensacola.

Cutting the Cord in Mobile and Pensacola
