Now is the time for everyone to cut the cord on cable TV. It starts with the decision to do away with those costly monthly bills, and it ends with you enjoying all the free TV in your media market. In between are three important steps: getting the right TV antenna, getting a compatible TV set, and installing your antenna. If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, installing an antenna might seem a bit intimidating. It’s easier than you might think, and Solid Signal is here to help you every step of way.
Step One: Get the Right TV Antenna
If you want to cut the cord on cable TV, you’ll need a TV antenna. The device lets you to watch all the free TV that’s available in your media market. There are two types of TV antennas – indoor and outdoor – that you can use. The type of antenna you need depends upon how far you live from the broadcast towers, the local terrain, and a few other factors.
Indoor TV antenna: If you live within 15 miles of your local TV transmitters, there’s a good chance that an indoor TV antenna is what you’ll need. Solid Signal carries a wide variety of indoor TV antennas to help you achieve the best reception.
Outdoor TV Antenna: If you live more than 15 miles from your local TV station transmitters, an outdoor TV antenna might be for you. These antennas are usually mounted upon the roof of your home. We carry a large selection of outdoor TV antennas for anyone who wants to cut the cord.
Step Two: Have a Compatible TV
To watch free HDTV with your TV antenna, you’ll need the right TV set. Cord-cutters have one of three choices to watch free TV:
- HDTV: Any LCD, plasma, or LED TV with the word “HDTV” somewhere on the unit.
- TV with Converter Box: If you still have an analog TV, you can use a converter box to watch OTA TV.
- Laptop or Computer: If you purchase a USB TV tuner, you can watch TV on your PC.
Step Three: TV Antenna Installation
Once you’ve chosen your TV antenna, we recommend putting it atop your roof. (Assuming you’ve purchased an outdoor TV antenna.) Generally speaking, the highest point atop your roof is usually the best place for an antenna to get signal. (Attic installs cut your estimated reception range in half.) A couple things to consider about TV antenna installation:
- Existing wiring form old cable or satellite installations can be used to distribute TV antenna signal.
- Splitters are used to divide the signal to multiple TV receivers.
